Developed by Cavendish and company at Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Cycling Team throughout the 2013, with Cavendish clocking up over 8000 miles on this wheel, to test and allow the guys at Zipp to refine, redesign to ultimately make the stiffest, lightest, more durable 404 yet.

Some major performance and aethestic changes have been made for 2014. First up is the extensively developed 188/V9 hub. A huge 25% more torsionally and laterally stiff than rival’s hubs giving a more direct ride, not wasting power delivery.

Performance is all well and good, but if the hub cannot stand up to the rigours of riding it is worthless. This is where new larger Swiss steel bearings, with a custom cartridge, are used to improve durability, by evenly spreading the stress over the axle.

Next up is the new lacing geometry. “Virtual 3 Cross” lacing applied to both sides of the rear wheel, improve ride quality and stiffness. 24 spokes used in a two cross pattern provide a reliable and solid ride.

The Firecrest® rim technology comprises of a wider, more rugged rim and also results in an aerodynamically enhanced wheel. Wider making the wheel more stable yet not affecting Zipp’s renowned smooth as butter rolling resistance. It also makes for a more comfortable yet also rigid ride.

A wider rim also means the tyre sits better, making for better cornering efficiency.

Firecrest® construction and shape improves the wheel’s ride in crosswinds as it moves the pressure on the wheel, away from the front, to the steering axis, giving the 58 millimetre rim the stability of a box rim but still holding all the superior aerodynamic traits you expect from a race ready wheel.

With this wider rim it is advisable you check the wheel fits your frame before you buy.

One of the lightest aero rear wheels on the market, at a mere 875 grams. This low weight is helped by the use of the new 245 gram hub.

New for 2015 is the beautifully, fully die cast black rim decals, now borderless, thinner and lighter. This is matched by a black hub to finish off, what is a stunning rear wheel.
