Speed

An integrated system is created by optimising the interface between the frame surfaces and wheel, this is called the ENVE smart system. Each wheel interacts differently with the air and the rest of the bicycle. To ensure less drag and an improved ride performance the rim shape is optimised to allow air to stay attached the the wheel at greater yaw angles.

The rear wheel is deeper to reduce drag where stability is less affected. Wheels were tested on multiple frame designs in order to produce the maximum drag reduction. The result is a wheel system, which handles predictably, and displays superior drag results when installed in multiple bicycle frame designs.

Stability

To gain total handling confidence steering feedback in variable conditions needs to be predictable. Even and predictable airflow attachment is guaranteed by the ENVE smart system. As the angle of the cross wind angle changes the rider experiences a balanced build up of force, rather than the traditional shunt sensation. This allows the rider to get an accurate prediction of the wheels handling mannerisms and how to avoid dangerous over correction cycles.

The focus on steering stability resulted in improved handling and confidence in varying crosswinds. Therefore, the wheel shape was optimised to produce a predictable and linear response. The target stability gradient was 1.0.
